What is Vipps?
Vipps is Norway’s mobile payment app, launched by DNB in 2015 and now so ordinary that "vippse" is a verb Norwegians use for paying each other. It is identified by phone number, backed by a card the user registered once, and it covers everything from splitting a bill to paying at a market stall to checking out online.
Since 2022 it has been part of Vipps MobilePay, the company formed when Norway’s Vipps merged with Denmark and Finland’s MobilePay. The brands stayed separate in each market — Norwegians still say Vipps — but the infrastructure behind them is now one, which is why the online flows look identical.
Online the app does the work. On a phone the Vipps app opens by itself; on a desktop the customer confirms their number and gets a push notification. Either way they approve with a fingerprint or PIN in the app, and the registered card behind the account is charged. That is worth knowing: unlike iDEAL or Swish, Vipps is card-backed underneath rather than a direct bank transfer.

Why Vipps, and why through Checky Pro
The top row is the method itself; the bottom row is what our platform adds on top of it.
Near-universal in Norway
Vipps is how Norwegians pay each other and increasingly how they pay online. A Norwegian checkout without it is missing the default.
The app does the work
On a phone the app opens by itself; on a desktop a push notification arrives. Either way there is nothing to type but a phone number.
One company with MobilePay
Since the 2022 merger, Vipps in Norway and MobilePay in Denmark and Finland run on the same infrastructure.
Tell us and it counts
The waitlist is how we decide what to contract next. Every merchant who asks for Vipps moves it up the list.
It would land in the same balance
When we do add it, Norwegian payments join the same balance and payout schedule as everything else — nothing new to reconcile.
Nothing to rebuild later
New methods are a switch in your dashboard, not an integration project. If Vipps arrives, you turn it on.
How a Vipps payment works
From click to balance — what your customer sees, and what happens behind it.
- 1
Enters their phone number
On a desktop the customer confirms their number; on a phone the Vipps app opens without one.
- 2
Gets a push notification
The Vipps app shows your store and the amount, and asks them to approve.
- 3
Approves with a fingerprint
A fingerprint or PIN confirms it, and the card registered to the Vipps account is charged.
- 4
Settled to your balance
How and when this settles is set once the method is contracted.

Can I accept Vipps through Checky Pro today?
No. None of our acquiring partners covers Vipps yet, so it is not something you can switch on. Leave your details on the waitlist and we will tell you the moment that changes.
What should I offer Norwegian customers instead?
Cards and wallets. Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay all work for Norwegian shoppers — they are just not the method most of them would pick first.
Is Vipps the same as MobilePay?
Same company since 2022, different brand per market. Vipps is the Norwegian name, MobilePay the Danish and Finnish one, and the technology behind them is shared.
Is Vipps a bank transfer like Swish?
No. Swish moves money account to account; Vipps charges a card the customer registered in the app. That is why card dispute rules would apply to it.
When will you support it?
We cannot promise a date — it depends on our acquiring partners. What we can say is that the waitlist is what we use to prioritise, so telling us matters.
