How iDEAL works — the payment method the Netherlands runs on

No card number, no account to create, no chargebacks. A short tour of what actually happens when a Dutch customer pays with iDEAL.

Ask a Dutch shopper how they pay online and the answer is rarely “with my card”. It is iDEAL — the bank-transfer standard the Dutch banks built together, wired into every banking app in the country. For a merchant selling into the Netherlands, understanding it is not optional: a Dutch checkout without iDEAL quietly reads as a foreign store.

The mechanics are refreshingly simple. The customer picks iDEAL, lands on the iDEAL page, chooses their bank, and approves the payment inside the banking app they already use every day. The money moves straight from their account to yours. No card number is typed at any point, which also means there is no card number to steal.

What the customer actually sees

On a desktop, the iDEAL page offers two routes: scan a QR code with the banking app, or pick a bank from the list and continue in internet banking. On a phone the detour disappears — the banking app opens directly. Either way the confirmation is the same tap-and-approve the customer performs for their own transfers, with the amount and your store name in view.

That familiarity is the quiet reason iDEAL converts. There is no form to mistype and no “is this site safe?” hesitation, because the trust question was settled years ago between the customer and their own bank.

iDEAL is one of a family: Bancontact, TWINT and BLIK play the same role in Belgium, Switzerland and Poland. Same pattern, different bank apps.

What it means for your operation

For you, iDEAL behaves like a bank transfer with instant confirmation. You know within seconds whether the money is coming, settlement lands in your balance in 3–7 business days, and for EU merchants the fee is 1% + € 0,40 per transaction — well below a card payment on most orders.

The catch, if you can call it that: iDEAL is a one-off push payment, so subscriptions still run on cards, and it only works for shoppers with a Dutch bank account. Everything else — including the rate for your region — is on our iDEAL page and in the availability checker.

Frequently asked

Can an iDEAL payment be reversed?

No. Once the customer approves in their banking app the transfer is final — there is no chargeback procedure. Refunds are something you issue yourself.

Do customers need to sign up for iDEAL?

No. iDEAL is built into the banking apps of every Dutch bank; if your customer banks in the Netherlands, they already have it.

Does iDEAL work for subscriptions?

Not directly — every iDEAL payment is a one-off. Merchants selling subscriptions in the Netherlands typically offer iDEAL for one-time orders and cards for recurring billing.
